Upcycle a basic sweatshirt with a metallic waistband, cuffs & fab cut-out back.
Forget your little black dress – take a look at this little black sweatshirt. It’s just perfect for holiday shopping and casual outings – it’s really stunning, yet easy to achieve. See how to get the look using Dritz metallic elastics for the waistband, cuffs and cut-out back. You can do it with trendy materials and simple sewing techniques.
When it’s good to walk away: the real stunner is the back of this sweatshirt, don’t you agree? We just love all the details this DIY sweatshirt refashion has to offer – from the waistband, to the cuffs, to that fabulous back.
It’s an easy-to-achieve look using a couple of different styles of Dritz metallic woven elastic. To achieve the back detail, you’ll use a 1″ woven metallic elastic and for the waist and cuffs, you’ll use the 1-3/4″ metallic waistband elastic.
In addition to the elastics, other key ingredients are your basic black sweatshirt, a good pair of fabric scissors, some straight pins, and an Omnigrid® ruler.
First, you’ll measure and mark cut-out on back of your sweatshirt. Cut along center line as shown.
Next, you’ll pin the 1″ elastic in place.
Now top stitch the elastic in place on each side of the cut-out.
Trim down the seam allowance on the back once you’re done.
Next you’ll replace the existing cuff with a strip of 1-3/4″ metallic waistband elastic.
Jump over to Trash To Couture to see the specifics about how to install the waistband.
You’ll use a similar sewing process for installing the 1-3/4″ metallic elastic on the cuffs of the sweatshirt.
And … you’re ready! This is such a fun project for December! You can wear this beauty for all of your holiday shopping outings, and to casual celebrations.
