Sewing Tutorial: Make a Shirred Wreath Hanger

Clever way to display a wreath & welcome friends!

It’s that time of year when folks gather, so what better way to welcome them to your home, than with a wreath hung with an easy-sew shirred wreath hanger. The best thing about this wreath hanger is that you can use the fabric of your choice to customize it – coordinate the hanger with your wreath, or give it holiday or seasonal flair. Add Dritz® grommets and easily hang it from a hook or nail. C’mon in!

Sewing Tutorial: Make a Shirred Wreath Hanger

Dritz® supplies:

Omnigrid® supplies:

Other supplies:

  • ¼ yd fabric
  • Coordinating thread
  • Hook or nail for hanging

Fabric prep: cut 2 pc: 4.5” x 36” for hanger


Dritz iron-on shirring tape and quick turn for sewing projects

Gather your supplies and cut your fabric to above measurements.

Shirred Wreath Hanger: Sewing flannel fabric

1) Place the 2 fabric pieces on top of each other, right sides together. Stitch one of the short ends with a ¼” seam allowance.

2) On the wrong side, fuse the iron-on shirring tape along the center of the fabric following the package directions.  Leave ½” unfused at each end.

3) Pull the strings out of the tape about 1” from each end.

4) Cut off the ends of the tape near the strings. Fuse tape ends if needed.

5) Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, right sides together. Pin. Stitch along the length of fabric leaving the short ends open. Backstitch at the beginning and end of stitches.

6) Use the quick turn fabric turner to turn the fabric right sides out.

7) Pull the strings to gather the tube to 28” long. Knot strings and clip the ends.

8) Fold the short raw edges in ½” on both ends. Pin and stitch across the opening 1/8” from edge.

9) Install a grommet at each end of the fabric tube following the package directions. Center the grommets ½” down from each end.

Here’s what your finished shirred wreath hanger looks like!

Now all you have to do is grab your wreath and hang it! The hanger works well on either a nail or hook.
