Sewing Tutorial: Easy-sew Napkins with Rings

Perfect circles and rings made easy with the Omnigrid® OmniArc™ ruler.

Looking for an easy way to incorporate circles and rings into your DIY fabric creations? Are you familiar with the OmniArc™ circle cutter ruler?  It’s got handy grooves and easy-to-read angle markings for cutting circles with a finished diameter of 4″, 6″, 8″, 10″ or 12″. We love how our friend, Jennifer Mathis, used the OmniArc™ ruler to craft these easy-sew napkins with “rings.” Take a look and see how she did it. Then take your new circle cutting know-how and apply it to any variety of fabric projects – quilts, pillows, curtains, place mats, runners, blankets and more!

Make the rings:

1) Fuse the iron-on paper-backed adhesive sheet to the wrong side of the 4 accent squares of fabric. Fold the accent squares in half wrong sides together, then in half again. Crease the folds.

2) Align folds with the radius markings on the OmniArc™ ruler. Hold ruler tightly and cut along the #3 groove from bottom to top. Do not move the ruler. Cut again along the #2 groove. Press hard. You may need to make a few rotary cuts in the grooves to cut through all of the layers.

3) You should now have a perfect ring with a 6” wide outer radius and a 4” wide inner radius. Repeat for the remaining 3 accent pieces.

Assembly:

4) Fold the napkin fabric in half then in half again. Crease the folds. Open. There should now be 4 quadrants. Press the rings with an iron to remove the creases. Remove the paper from one ring. Center the ring in the bottom left quadrant. Fuse in place with an iron.

5) Topstitch around the ring, both outer and inner edges, with a blanket stitch. Backstitch at the beginning and end.

Repeat steps 4 and 5 for remaining napkins.

Binding:

6) Remove selvedges from binding strips. Each napkin will need two strips joined together for the binding. Join two binding strips together at a right angle. Place right sides together and sew a diagonal line of stitches from the top left corner to the bottom right corner. Trim fabric leaving a ¼” seam allowance to the right of the line of stitches. Press the seam open.

7) Fold fabric in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Press. Open and fold the raw edges to the center crease. Press again. Spray starch is helpful here. Fold the binding in half once more enclosing the raw edges. Press. Make the bottom of the binding slightly wider than the top.

8) Place binding around napkin edges sandwiching the raw edge. Place the slightly wider side on the wrong side of the napkin. Miter the corners of each napkin and hold the binding in place with fabric glue or Getta Grip® sewing clips

9) Topstitch 1/8″ from the edge of the binding on the right side of the napkin, leaving a 4” tail at each end unsewn. Trim so that the fabric tails overlap by ½”.
