Refashioning: How to Make a T-shirt Quilt

Turn that stack of old T-shirts into something you love.

We all have them – piles of old T-shirts stashed in closets or drawers, saved with the hope that someday you’ll transform them into something special. Well here’s that something, and it’s something you’ve been wanting to make: a T-shirt quilt! See how Laura at Trash To Couture refashioned a stack of her husband’s sports Ts into a one-of-a-kind quilt that’s not only cozy, but packed with fond memories, too.

First, you’ll need a stack of Ts and your basic Dritz® sewing supplies (pins, etc.). Next, clear a space at your Omnigrid® cutting station (mat, ruler and rotary cutter) and you’re ready to get started.

In general, here is how to make a T-shirt quilt:

  • cut and even out the logo area from each shirt using your Omnigrid® tools;
  • apply fusible interfacing to the back of each block;
  • lay your blocks out and plan placement;
  • sew/serge the blocks beginning with rows.

  • sew/serge rows together to complete your quilt top;
  • place the quilt top onto batting and trim/sew;
  • create a backing to measure quilt top;
  • pin and sew.

T-shirts quilts are nothing new. They’re popular because we all tend to have so many T-shirts that we just can’t part with: T-shirts celebrating college days, festivals & concerts, sports, etc.

A T-shirt quilt is a simple DIY project that is so satisfying to complete because it serves as an homage to the glory days!  They make fantastic gifts, too – great for your graduate, kids and spouse.

Stay in touch with us and see what we’re up to! We have lots of fun each and every day on Instagram and Facebook, and we have Dritz® and Omnigrid® YouTube channels packed with helpful videos.

We hope we’ve inspired you to make that T-shirt quilt you’ve been thinking about!
