What’s super fun about these bags – besides being inexpensive – is that you get to incorporate a pop of fabric for the gusset and handles. And of course the hardware.

Basic supplies needed are 2 placemats, some fabric, a loop turner and the Dritz hardware of your choice. Note: this bag used a small swivel hook & D-ring set in nickel, as well as a tassel cap.

First you’ll make the turned fabric strip for the gusset and sew it in place to connect the two placemats.

Next you’ll make the turned fabric strips that will become the handles. Note: you could also use leather for the handles; the Dritz rivets would be the ideal hardware to attach leather handles to the bag.

Next you’ll make the fabric tabs which are used to attach the hardware to the bag.

Sew the first tab onto one side of the bag to attach the D-ring. Sew a second tab onto the opposite side of the bag to attach the swivel hook.
