Refashioning: Dress Shirt to Skirt, Halter Top with Dritz Elastic

Spring upcycles are the jam.

This skirt is just so sassy, we can’t wait to make (and wear) one! It’s another clever refashion from Laura at Trash To Couture, using a men’s dress shirt. The very cool thing about this sewing project is that you can also wear it as a halter top – and when you do, you’ve got options with how you tie it. And whether wearing it as a skirt or halter, rest assured it sits comfortably in place, thanks to the Dritz® elastic you’ll insert at its top.

Take a look. Hard to believe this started out as a men’s dress shirt, huh?

Take another look. Here it is worn as a top. When worn as a top, you decide how you want to tie it … in the front, around the back, or crisscross the sashes and tie them around your neck. It’s a different look every time – cool or what?

Here’s a view of the back. Ready to see how it’s done? Here are the basic instructions…

First you will cut off the arms, and then cut off the top underneath the arm holes (the bottom becomes your skirt/halter).

The arms will become the “sashes.”

You’ll measure a couple of inches or so from the top edge to create the casing for your elastic. (You can choose the width of your elastic, and that will determine the size of your casing.)

Attach the sashes on each side, and create the casing for the elastic.

Next you’ll insert the elastic. (Note that Laura used Dritz® 3/4″ knit elastic, but you have options when it comes to width. See all Dritz® knit elastic here.)
