Dritz® Home supplies:

Other supplies:

  • Home décor fabric or duck canvas per measurements (see how to calculate below)
  • Sewing machine and matching thread
  • Iron and pressing surface
  • Spring tension rod

How to calculate fabric needed:

  • Measure height of shelf opening and width of shelf.
  • Length = shelf height + 6 ½”. Width = shelf width x 3; piece together as needed.

Note: You can also divide fabric into 2 pieces for center opening on skirt.

1) Using the drapery hem gauge, fold bottom edge of fabric up 6” for bottom hem; press. Open hem and bring raw edge in to meet crease. Close hem and press again. Edgestitch along top of hem. Fold top edge under ½” for top hem; press. You do not have to stitch this side.

2) Fold sides in 2” for side hems; press. Open side hems and bring raw edge in to meet crease. Close hems and press again. Edgestitch along hem.

Note: We loved the fringe selvage on this fabric and decided not to hem the sides of our shelf skirt.

Use Dritz® Stitch Witchery® to secure all the hems before applying shirring tape.

3) Lay shelf skirt on pressing surface, wrong side up. Position iron-on shirring tape, adhesive side down, ¼” from top of skirt. Allow at least 3” of tape to overhang on each side. Pull cords out of tape at edge of skirt. Trim off excess tape without cutting cords.
