Before you check out our finished Ts, we’ve got some refashioning techniques to familiarize yourself with. You’ll use these techniques as building blocks – mix and match them to DIY T-shirts that are truly one-of-a-kind. (And, hey, you can use these techniques on any garment …)

The T: Super sporty.

The technique: encase a raw edge with fold-over elastic. We cut slits on the sleeves and added fold-over elastic, and also added it around the neckline. Dritz fold-over elastic comes in many colors and a few widths – take a look and pick a fave!

The T: peekaboo.

The technique: add fold-over elastic to the deep, front cut-out; sew on some hook & eye fasteners. See all Dritz hook fasteners here, or jump right to the ones shown above.

The T: all the gathers.

The technique: add gathers by sewing clear elastic to the inside of the T, stretching while you stitch. Above image shows you what the gathers look like on the outside of the T.

The T: trendy twist ties.

The technique: use hardware to create details, like these ties.  We created the ties using Dritz D-rings. Just cut a slit where you want the tie to be, slide 2 D-rings onto one of the tails and stitch in place, loop other tail through the D-rings to create tie.

The T: all laced up.

The technique: apply eyelets, and then weave with lacing. There are lots of options with this technique depending on the size/finish of eyelets you choose, and the type of lacing you use (think ribbon, fabric, etc.). Hint: eyelets can also be applied as a surface embellishment only – you don’t have to lace them. This refashioned sweatshirt is a perfect example.

The T: the cut-up.

The technique: create precise cuts by taking the time to measure accurately, like we did to create the evenly spaced cut-outs on the back of this T. Cinch them up with elastic, which also adds a fun pop of color!
