Inspiration: Tank Tops with Dritz Hardware & Double Gauze Fabric

This dynamic duo packs a fashionable punch.

Turns out, opposites really do attract. We paired some of our new Dritz® hardware with Embrace® double gauze fabrics to make three different tank tops. We used the same sewing pattern from BurdaStyle Magazine for all three, but we hacked it up a bit and added a variety of different fasteners to give each its own look. The result? Some pretty great looking tops! Each is unique, and boasts professional details, plus a perfect fit. Win, win, win!

Before we show you our hacks, take a look at the sewing pattern. It’s the Rope & Linen Tank, produced by BurdaStyle Magazine. We purchased the PDF download and printed it for use in making our tanks.

Pattern hack – tank with back bow tie:

To create this dramatic back bow tie tank, we used the standard pattern but mashed up the strap style. Our long fabric straps connect on the front with ribbon that’s tied through two Dritz® fashion grommets on each side. On the back of the tank, the straps are woven through more fashion grommets and then tied in a bow.

The grommet border detail? Well that’s just a bonus.

Pattern hack – eyelets & cable cord straps:

To make this tank, we didn’t stray too far from the original sewing pattern, but we did opt for more delicate materials to make the straps. We used Dritz® 1/4″ eyelets and cable cord in our version of this tank. We thought that these materials paired really well with the double gauze fabric shown here.

Pattern hack – adjustable fabric straps with hardware:

Comfort and fit rule supreme on this tank! We used the original sewing pattern, but changed up the straps completely. Here we used our adjustable slide buckles combined with triangle rings to make fabric straps that fit perfectly because they’re adjustable.

These versatile tanks are great to make and wear any time of the year. Because the Embrace® double gauze fabric is light and flowing, these tanks layer perfectly with fall denim, vests and wraps (no bulk here!).

What do you think? Isn’t it fun to use a variety of hardware and materials to create one-of-a-kind pieces of clothing? It’s really pretty easy once you put your mind to it, and envision each garment you make as an opportunity to mix, match and mash it up!

Now that you’re inspired, here is more information about the specific products we used to make each tank…

New Dritz® fashion grommets were used on the silver tank top. They are 1/2″ and come in both black and white. One key feature of these grommets is that they have a clear insert piece that provides stability once applied – no interfacing is needed when using them with the Embrace® double gauze or any other thin, delicate fabrics. They’re easy to apply using a hand tool.

Dritz® 2-part eyelets and cable cord were used on this tank. Again, the eyelets have a clear insert pieces making them ideal for the double gauze fabric on this tank. They are available in matte gold, nickel and gunmetal. They are easy to apply using a hand tool.

We like how the bold hardware contrasts with the double gauze on this tank. It’s a bit unexpected and it works. We used Dritz® triangle rings and adjustable slides in gunmetal finish to make the functional adjustable straps.

The choices you’ve got with Dritz® hardware are pretty immense. Be sure to acquaint yourself with all of the parts, pieces and finishes that are available. You will have fun designing your next piece – promise!

And that fabric! We can’t forget the fabric. One of the reasons we embarked on this project was to see what we could do with the Embrace® double gauze. Turns out, you can do a lot! It pairs perfectly with a variety of Dritz® products, and believe us, our wish list of future projects is growing … think double gauze pillows, PJ bottoms, robes, curtains and more! We hope that our inspiration has given you some new ideas for your next sewing projects – garments or otherwise. In fact, we’d love it if you’d share your ideas with us! Tell us what’s next on your list, and how you’re mashing it up!

Happy sewing!
