A clever way to celebrate favorite moments.
Want to make cherished moments last longer? Capture them by making a memory pillow! Our easy-sew pillows are easy to craft, and don’t they look dynamite? Celebrate a birth, a special sports season or a simple family story – the ideas are endless. You’ll print your memories onto Dritz inkjet fabric, and then iron the printed image onto your pillow fabric. Done and done! Great gift idea, too!
Gather the following craft supplies:
- Dritz® iron-on inkjet printable fabric
- 1/3 yard of fabric
- Omnigrid® rotary cutter, ruler & mat
- Dritz® Wash Away™ Wonder Tape
- 1 yard of 3/8″ ribbon
- Dritz® Fray Check™ liquid seam sealant
- Straight pins
- Fabric pen/pencil
- Sewing machine
- Inkjet printer
|1) Cut your pillow fabric into two 11″ squares.
Following the instructions on the inkjet fabric package, print the photo(s) for use on your pillow. NOTE: our printed photo/design is 7-1/4″ square.
|2) Still following the instructions on the inkjet fabric package, apply your design to the center of the fabric square.|
|3) Put a few small strips of the Wonder Tape down each side of your photograph. You don’t want to attach the ribbon frame with straight pins, and put holes in your design – so the tape is perfect!|
|4) To create the ribbon frame, cut four pieces of ribbon measuring about 1/2″ longer than each edge of your design.
5) Make a mark that is 3/8″ in from the end of the ribbon.
If you’re using a different ribbon width, the placement for your mark should be the same as the width of your ribbon.
|6) Pin two ribbons together, and draw a diagonal line from the corner to your mark.
If your ribbon has a 1-sided pattern, you’ll want to put the right sides together.
|7) Stitch on the diagonal line, cut off the corner of excess ribbon and apply Fray Check™ to the cut edges. Press open for the 90° angle.
8) Repeat this method for the other two pieces of ribbon.
|9) Now you will need to stitch the ends of these two sections of ribbon together (remember these ends should be on the diagonal, like the others).
This will complete your square frame, and when you’re done, it should look like this.
|10) Now you can place your ribbon frame on top of the Wonder Tape, finger-press it in place and stitch on.|
|11) Totally optional, but we made these cute little name tags to sew in the bottom corner of our pillows. Want to try to some?
Arrange text/design in a rectangular grid and print on a separate inkjet sheet. Cut rectangles, remove backing paper, then fold the fabric in half and press the two sides together to adhere.
|12) Decide how you want tag placed. Align tag text side down along edge of pillow fabric as shown; use Wonder Tape to secure tag if desired.
Pin the fabric squares with right sides together, and leave a 6-7″ opening on the bottom side so you can insert a pillow form. Stitch together with a 1/4″ seam allowance.
|14) Turn the fabric right side out, insert your pillow form, and ladder stitch the opening.|
|HINT: we used Dritz® Getta Grip® sewing clips to help hold the fabric together, so you get an even ladder stitch. It really helps with hand fatigue, too!|
There are a couple of great things about this project. First, you can create a memory pillow to commemorate so many things. Second, you can never have too many pillows! This time of year, we’re thinking Christmas gifts, and these would certainly fit that bill.
