Beginner Sewing: Make a Tote Bag with Adjustable Strap

The best basic: if you can make one tote, this is it.

We talk a lot about tote bags (because we love them), and we give you lots of options for bag making. But if you want to cut to the chase and make just one tote bag, this is it. This is our basic tote, with an adjustable, removable strap. We really dig the new Dritz striped belting and think that this is the perfect way to highlight it. Hope you’ll agree!

Refer to our beginner tote bag sewing tutorial to understand the construction of the bag itself and note that we went with exterior belting detail that goes to the base of the bag on both sides.

For the hardware that is on the bag itself, we used four rectangle rings on the exterior belting detail (2 on each side). We also used two D-rings on each side of the bag, attached with a small tab of belting (this is where the removable strap will attach).

To make the strap, you will need about 45″ of belting (in this case the 1-1/2″ striped polyester navy/white), two 1-1/2″ swivel hooks and one 1-1/2″ adjustable slide buckle.

Our 20 best bags post is packed with inspiration, but if you want a solid basic, this is it. The adjustable strap is a nice addition, and made with the striped belting, it’s a real stand-out.
