Beginner Sewing: Make an Incredibly Easy Fabric Book Mark

Ten minutes is all it takes. (Yes, we said 10 minutes.)

This project is easy. Period. You’ll use scrap fabric plus a few basic Dritz® sewing supplies to make these super cute bookmarks in just a few minutes. They are great for getting the feel of using the sewing machine, and they make creative gifts – so you can never have too many on hand.

Other supplies:

  • Fabric and fusible interfacing scraps (2” x 7” minimum size)
  • Iron and pressing surface
  • Sewing machine and matching thread
  • Pinking shears
  • Optional: 4” piece of ribbon

1) Cut out fabric and interfacing pieces.

  • 2 pcs: 2” x 7” cotton fabric
  • 2 pcs:  2” x 7” fusible interfacing

2) Fuse interfacing to WS of fabric pieces. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for fusing.

3) Pin WS of fabric pieces together. Line up edges as much as possible.

4) The bookmark will be stitched around the edges by lining up the edge of the bookmark with the edge of the presser foot. With your sewing gauge, measure the distance from the edge of the presser foot to the needle.

5) For easy pivoting at the corners, mark this distance in from each edge at each corner. The intersecting lines will mark the pivot point.

6) Stitch around the edges of the bookmark, pivoting at each mark.

7) Trim around all edges with pinking shears.

8) If you’re adding the ribbon detail, fold ribbon piece in half and pin near top of bookmark. Stitch across ribbon to secure.
