First, you’ll need a place to put your things and a dedicated spot is best. There are many wonderful sewing basket options out there, so pick one based on what you like! Most Dritz baskets have a removable storage tray for small notions, a built-in pin cushion, and a magnetic snap closure. (Not to mention all the fun fabric choices!)

Pins are the “glue” that will help you connect all those gorgeous pieces of fabric, and keep them in place while you work. They are a must for your beginning sewing basket. The Dritz Sew 101 pins are all ideal for general sewing and craft projects. Pearlized and color ball pins are easy to see and handle because of their bright heads!

Needle sizes work like this: the larger the needle size, the shorter and finer the needle. Select your needle size according to the weight of your fabric.

Remember that sharps are sharp (ha!), and that ball point needles have a rounded tip for use with stretch and knit fabrics. Easy-threading needles have a slot in the outer eye for easy threading.

A good 60″ fiberglass tape measure is what you need for all sewing projects. For marking, you can choose tailor’s chalk for quick and easy marking or marking pencils for more precise marking such as transferring dots or buttonhole markings from pattern pieces. Make sense?

The first rule when it comes to cutting is to keep your scissors sharp, and use them only for fabric – no paper! You’ll need one good pair as a minimum. A second smaller pair really helps with detail work.

Your sewing machine manual will tell you if you need a specific sewing machine needle. The Dritz Sew 101 machine needles work with most machines.
Universal needles can be used on most fabrics. Ballpoint needles are for use on knit and stretch fabrics. Select the needle size of either type according to the weight of your fabric: lightweight (9 or 11), medium-weight (11 or 14), heavy-weight (14 or 16).

These tools are used for transferring pattern markings to fabric. To get started, sandwich the tracing paper between your fabric and pattern. Trace along pattern markings using the tracing wheel and the markings will be transferred to your fabric. Works like magic!

If you know what your first project is going to be, round out your selection of basic notions with add-on items like elastic and hooks & eyes.

Elastic is needed for starter projects like skirts and belts. Hooks & eyes easily hold together two finished edges of fabric.
