Scissors

You need one pair of good scissors, minimum, and they need to be nice and sharp. Bent-handle shears are the best for multi-purpose needs. A second smaller pair for detail work really helps. (Both scissors shown are from the Omnigrid® range of premium cutting supplies.)

TIP: Keep your sewing scissors for fabric only – no paper!

Tape Measure

You’ve got to have a tape measure! You’ll measure to place patterns, measure fabric width, measure yourself! Many styles are available for different uses; the 60″ fiber glass tape measure is a good basic.

Straight Pins

Obvious right? You’ll need straight pins to connect your fabric pieces and to hold things together while you work.

Dritz®  Easy Grasp™ pins have elongated heads that are easy to grip. Pearlized pins are popular because of their colorful heads. Dressmaker pins offer utility for general sewing purposes.

TIP: If you choose glasshead pins, you can iron over them and the heads won’t melt!

Pin Cushion

Very, very helpful – any size, any style. Pin cushions are great for organizing pins, and needles, too!

TIP: The strawberry on the standard Dritz® tomato pin cushion is filled with emery – just slide pins and needles in and out to sharpen them.

Hand Sewing Needles

A basic assortment of hand sewing needles is fine to begin with – that way you’ll have a variety of eye sizes, point types, and shaft thicknesses to choose from. Different projects and fabrics/materials call for different needles!

Machine Needles

Your sewing machine won’t work without sewing machine needles!

Universal needles work on everything, really. Choose sizes 9, 11 or 14 (light- to medium-weight fabrics), and 14, 16 or 18 (medium- to heavy-weight fabrics).

Marking Tools

You’ll need these tools to mark seam lines and pattern markings. Choose from chalks, pencils, and pens; a good basic is the Mark-Be-Gone™ marking pen. Use marking tools with tracing paper to mark stitching lines and multiple layers of fabric at once.

When it comes to marking, you’ll find the tools you choose are determined by the complexity of your project, or simply by personal preference!

Iron & Ironing Surface

We combined these two because you can’t use one without the other! An iron and an ironing surface are essential throughout the construction of your sewing project.

Some staples in our sewing lab are: the silicone iron rest, thermal thimbles (no burnt fingers!), ironing blanket (transforms any surface into an ironing spot), and the table top ironing board (space saver!).

Safety Pins

Safety pins are just handy to have around! You’ll use them to pull elastic through casings, or to pin quilts or multiple layers of fabric. An assorted pack is best. If you are quilting, curved safety pins are what you need.
