So what exactly is Dritz® iron-on shirring tape?

It’s a woven tape that has rows of cords running through it. The tape is attached to a flat fabric panel and then the cords are pulled to gather the fabric into even pleats, like this …

To attach the tape to your fabric, you simply iron it on. (This, by the way, is what makes our shirring tape unique, and also so darn easy to use.)

See how the cords are then pulled to create the pleating? The fullness of the pleats is determined by how tight the cords are pulled. Make sense?

Now you’re probably wondering, well, what can you do with this fabulous tape? Glad you asked!

It’s great for making pillows. The shirring tape was used here on its front panel. Take a close look at those gathers, and notice there are no stitching lines. Nice, huh?

Then there’s this …

Table skirts are awesome because they can transform any old table into a pretty work surface, with hidden storage underneath. In our sewing room, this pleated table skirt is hiding an inexpensive plastic table. After we made the shirred panel, we attached it to the table using adhesive backed hook & loop tape. (Talk about easy!)

Kid’s play room a mess? We hear ya! Here books and clutter are hidden behind this shelf skirt.

(Pro tip: This project was totally no-sew because we used Stitch Witchery® on its hem.)

If DIY window treatments are your thing, you can use the shirring tape to make pleats in any panel – sewn or purchased! Hang it from a decorative or standard rod with pin-on hooks

(We positioned the shirring tape 3-4″ from the top of this valance to make a floppy header.)

So, bet you’re trying to figure out where you can use this tape. Let us know what you come up with! We’ve given you some good ideas for pillows, table and shelf skirts, and DIY curtains. But we know you’re a clever bunch … leave us a comment and tell us what you make!
