First, we’ve found it’s helpful to mark right and left shoes with masking tape after cutting out your fabric pieces. Just be sure to remove the tape while pressing, and then replace it on the toes of shoes when you’re done pressing.

Before turning shoe pieces, press seam allowances at openings toward the wrong side. This will make it very easy to fold seam allowances to the inside after turning. Our handy hem gauge will help you to get a nice clean edge.

When pinning your fabric to your sole, insert your pins at an angle for the best grip into the jute sole. Try to avoid pushing the pins completely through the sole – your fingers will thank you when it’s time to stitch the fabric to the sole.

If your yarn keeps knotting and twisting while you’re sewing, there are 2 things you can try. Allow the yarn and needle to dangle from the shoe every few stitches. This will remove any extra twists that may be in the yarn.

It’s also really helpful to use yarn wax if your yarn keeps knotting. Always wax yarn 2 or 3 times before stitching. Pressing over the yarn will help to smooth yarn. Just pull yarn under a hot iron and you’re ready to go. You can also reapply wax while stitching. This will keep the yarn gliding smoothly through the jute.

Okay, that’s what we’ve got for you so far! Have you tried making a pair of Dritz® Espadrilles yet? Do you have any tips or tricks of your own you’d like to share? Leave us a comment below and let us know. We’d love to hear from you!
