No-Sew Project: How to Make a Macramé Dreamcatcher

Easy DIY that delivers great looks for your home: doors, walls, gallery wall collections.

Looking for some easy DIY to fill the long days of summer? Maybe even something you can get the teens in on? Done and done – this macramé dreamcatcher fits the bill. To make one you need just a few simple supplies (primarily Dritz cable cord and some kind of a hoop or ring). You’ll use a couple easy techniques to weave and knot the cable cord. Finishing options include greenery, or paper flags, which we personalized with a “hello” greeting.

Take a closer look. The basic steps to make this are: 1) paint or stain the hoop (if desired), 2) weave the dreamcatcher part in the center of the hoop, 3) add the fringe at the bottom, 4) finish with flags and/or greenery (if desired).

A bit more about the supplies: the 2 key ingredients are the Dritz cable cord and an embroidery hoop (the one we used is ~12″ in diameter).

The greenery and flags are optional. If you do want to add flags, you’ll need card stock weight paper in the color of your choice.

Weave the dreamcatcher first, as shown, making a web-like pattern. Note that we did not weave all the way into the center, because we wanted to leave an open space for the flags.

Here is a closer look at the weaving.

Next you will make the fringe for the bottom of your dreamcatcher, using a lark’s head knot as shown. This part is super easy! (In fact, you can skip the woven part altogether and make a simple macramé piece with just a fringed bottom if desired.)

Finishing with flags with a personalized message: since we hung this on the front door, we wanted to add a greeting to our dreamcatcher. To do so we cut out some simple paper flags and used Dritz eyelets to string the cord. Use hand lettering or stickers for your message.
