Easy Crafts: Make a Braided Elastic Bracelet

Fresh and fun for spring.

Okay so we all know about the bracelet-making craze that’s going on with rubber bands, but what about braiding with woven fold-over elastic? It’s super soft, super colorful and super easy to work with – better yet, there’s no loom required. Want to be a DIY trendsetter? Upgrade your look with Dritz elastic!

Easy Crafts: Make a Braided Elastic Bracelet

To make this bracelet, you’ll need:

  • Dritz 5/8″ fold-over elastic, approx. 1 yard each of 4 colors
  • Dritz Fray Check™ Seam Sealant
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Safety pin or tape

Tie all of the elastic strips together, leaving approximately 8″ of loose elastic to create your bow once you’ve completed your braiding. You will be braiding the ~28″ length of elastics.

Secure the knot to your work space with either tape or a safety pin.

Designate your 2 color sets and separate them as shown. These sets will always be together after each step.

For our bracelet, pink and yellow are a set, and blue and green are a set. Make sense?

Take advantage of the elastic’s center crease, and fold the elastic in half as you work.

One side of the elastic is shiny, the other is matte – the finish of your bracelet is up to you!

Remember the sets we talked about above? Well the outer elastic (from either set) will always cross over and around the inner elastic on the opposite side.

So here, green crossed over and around the yellow. Now blue is on the outside.

Next, the outer elastic on the opposite side (pink), then crossed over and around the elastic you just used (green).

Starting again, that leaves blue and yellow on the outside now. And we go to the opposite side … so blue goes over and around the pink (the last color used).

One last time – yellow over and around the blue (the last color used).

Now just keep going until you weave the length you need. (Are you getting into a groove yet?!)

End by tying a knot.

To finish, pick the color that you want for your bow, and closely trim off all of the other elastic strands.

Seal the cut ends with Fray Check™ (that magical liquid seam sealant).

Tie your bow! And because the elastic is stretchy, it will hold the bow – no retying!

Don’t you love this idea? Want to whip one up for the weekend? The Dritz fold-over elastic comes in a range of dynamite colors – something to match your Easter outfit for sure. And if not for this weekend, this craft project is big fun to DIY with your young ones this spring or summer.

Happy crafting!
