Christmas Crafts: Make an Elastic Gift Band

Presents have never been prettier.

Hopefully your holiday shopping is just about done and you’re ready to do some wrapping. If so, we’ve got some clever bows and bands that will make your gifts stand out under the tree. The bows and bands add punch to plain brown wrapping (which I love!), but they also look great on printed gift wrap, and gift bags, too. The bands are super easy to make, and we’ll show you how to make a big loopy fabric bow, too. Ready?

Christmas Crafts: Make an Elastic Gift Band (& Fabric Bow) with Dritz sewing supplies

To make the fabric bow and an elastic gift band, the Dritz sewing supplies you’ll need are:

  • Dritz® elastic (we used glitter, woven fold-over, and ruffled styles)
  • Dritz® Stitch Witchery®
  • 2″ x 40″ strip of fabric
  • Rotary cutter, mat & ruler
  • Iron
  • Needle & thread
  • Glue
  • Embellishments (optional)

At the 4″ point, fold it back towards the beginning. Then fold it back down the other way, but with the seam side down. Continue this zigzag fold with the edges touching when you’re done.

Before you tie it off, insert a few snazzy feathers or embellishments as you’re wrapping. Then wrap all the extra thread around the center and tie it off.

Tie or stitch the ends together, and hand stitch the bow to the band over the joined ends to conceal.

If you’re not interested in making the fabric bow, you can also simply make a bow using the ribbon of your choice (we like wire-edged). Stitch your bow to the elastic band as above, and wrap your gift! You’re done!

Hope your holiday preparations are wrapped up soon (ha, ha – couldn’t resist!). Happy making!
