Road Trip: Missouri Star Quilt Company

A quilter’s paradise in Hamilton, Missouri.

If you’re a quilter with a bucket list, make sure that this is on it: a visit to the Missouri Star Quilt Company. Our team recently traveled to Hamilton, Missouri, to participate in an inaugural educational event including our Omnigrid® rulers. What they discovered was pretty unique. It wasn’t simply a company. It wasn’t just a store. Hamilton is an entire town pretty much dedicated to all things quilting. Paradise, right? Take a look.

Before reading about all the fun our team had in Hamilton, you’ll want to know the inspiring story behind Missouri Star Quilt Co., and see just how the Missouri Star’s owners, the Doan family, turned this rural town into a top-notch quilting destination. It’s pretty amazing what the Doan’s have achieved using a YouTube channel packed with quilting tutorials, combined with a big batch of creativity.

Visitors to Missouri Star are welcomed by a friendly greeter who really makes you feel at home. After getting your name badge and signing in, you’ll be given an overview of how Missouri Star is set up. The whole place is designed to maximize your quilting experience, whether it’s to shop, learn, or simply explore. Not your run-of-the-mill quilt or fabric shops, huh?

All of the fabric collections are grouped by theme, and housed in 12 individual stores. These shots show the Batik Boutique fabrics, the Kids & Baby fabrics and the Backings & Trims collection.

Clean. Fresh. Modern.

You just feel good when you’re here!

The Mercantile is a popular shop, where you really feel as if you have stepped back in time. The period-style props are fantastic and really anchor the fabrics and finished quilts displayed around them, giving them authenticity and context.

All of the themed shops are expertly propped and very aesthetically pleasing; this image shows batiks, florals, and primitives & wool collections. No matter what your flavor, Missouri Star has it!

The day spent perusing the Missouri Star shops left our team full of goodwill, project lists, ideas & inspiration, and …

… shopping bags! There were quite a few shopping bags.

The Frank Bench Bakery - Home of Sliced Bread

Interesting bit of trivia for you: did you know that the Frank Bench Bakery is the home of sliced bread? Our team stumbled upon this fun factoid in Chillicothe, Missouri.

This tidbit is totally unrelated to quilting, but provides the segue to day two (and gives you a glimpse of some of the oddball things we learn while on the road!!).

The Dritz Team Teaching at Missouri Star Quilt Company Academy

Teaching at the first ever Missouri Star Academy – this was one of the main goals of the trip to Hamilton. Spreading the word about our Omnigrid® quilting rulers is always a learning experience – for the attendees and for us!
