This handy caddy holds fabric and thread scraps.
It’s mid-January: are your organizational efforts and resolutions coming to fruition? We typically take the first month of the year to straighten up, purge and plan the year’s sewing and DIY projects. Are you with us? Our first project for 2020 is a cute scrap caddy from our blogger, Laura, at Trash To Couture. See how easy it is to make the caddy, and learn about the other tools Laura uses to keep her studio organized.
Kick start your studio clean-up.
Well isn’t this a tidy space? The scrap caddy is right at home next to your sewing machine. The Dritz bobbin ring and thread rack are perfect companions to the caddy, and keep threads handy and ready to use.
Make the caddy.
Jump over to Trash To Couture to see just how easy it is to make the caddy. You’ll begin by folding the right sides of your fabric together and sewing to construct the body of the caddy.
Pin the bottom in place and sew.
Attach the circular bottom to the body of the caddy with a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Serge or finish the seam allowance with elastic.
Laura serged her caddy, but you can also use Dritz fold-over elastic or bias tape to finish the seam allowance if you don’t have a serger.
Put it to work.
The caddy looks great, don’t you think? We really love Laura’s fabric choice and think it adds a nice pop of color and personality to the space. It’s an easy project and while the intent is to stash fabric and thread scraps while you’re working, you can also use it to store marking pencils and small sewing tools.
Organize all the things.
Be sure to check out our work space essentials – you might discover a new item or two that can help you get your gear in order. The magnetic pin caddy, bobbin ring and thread rack shown above are real fan favorites!
Don’t forget about your rulers.
We’ve got a handy ruler stand for that. Use it on your cutting table like Laura does to house large or odd-shaped rulers and gauges. It’s pretty clever – you will wonder what you did without it!
Are you ready to tackle 2020? We are!
