A raw wood cubby goes high style with the addition of trendy hardware.
Really great looking, custom pieces can be yours when you discover all of the things you can do with Dritz campaign hardware. What is it, you ask? Our campaign hardware is decorative, non-functioning hardware that is applied to wood (or other hard) surfaces to add interesting details and provide a professional finish. Woodworkers and DIY enthusiasts alike can use it to elevate all kinds of projects – it’s ideal for both accessories and furniture. See how we transformed this plain cubby and get inspired!
Take a closer look at the before and after shots. We found this wood cubby at a local Amish furniture store, specializing in raw wood furniture. These kinds of stores are common and typically offer a treasure trove of unfinished pieces, ripe for your creative endeavors.
To DIY this bookcase, you’ll follow these same general steps to paint the piece and install the hardware. Be sure to also read through these installation tips – you’ll find some really good pointers for installing the campaign hardware successfully. You can also use this handy template to print out, and plan the placement of, the campaign hardware pieces, and determine how many pieces you need to purchase to accomplish your specific project/design.
Note that for the vertical bookshelf variation of this project, we did not add any furniture legs. (You’ll see a horizontal bench variation below using this same cubby.)
We created an interesting focal point on the top of the shelf using 4 pieces of the small quatrefoil campaign hardware framed by 4 pieces of the large hammered “L” shaped pieces. Large smooth right angle corners are used in the corners on the top of the shelf.
The large smooth right angle corners are also used to call attention to each shelf.
This is the second variation of this project. Simply by positioning the piece horizontally vs. vertically, we created a bench type storage unit from the same piece. We changed up the look a little bit by adding the Dritz fluted column bun feet, painted using the same color as the bench.
We quite like the horizontal variation of this piece as it makes a great end-of-bed storage unit. You’ve got options!
